Stamper’s By The Dozen – Background Techniques

Happy St. Patrick’s Day readers!  It’s time for the next Stamper’s By The Dozen Hop.  This month I am very excited about the projects as we are creating projects using special background techniques!

While background techniques are normally not the way I create, I remembered a very fun technique I used a few months ago to create a great galaxy background that was so easy and so beautiful that I knew I had to dig deep down into the archives and pull this technique out again.

The galaxy technique needs very little supplies: shaving cream (make sure you use the foam type and not the gel), a paper plate, and two colors of reinkers.  I used Dapper Denim and Rich Razzleberry for my two colors.  First, you will want to use a layer of the shaving cream down on the plate and in a random order, drop the reinker colors over the foam.  Next, swirl the foam (I used a palette knife).

Now would be the perfect time to do the Marble Technique in the foam but with the galaxy technique, let this swirl of foam and color sit.  I let mine sit for 24 hours.  By letting it sit, the foam becomes aerated and becomes sparkly with some great shimmer aspects to it!

The next step is to lay your piece of Whisper White cardstock into the foam and gently tap the back of the paper to pick up the color.

When you lift the paper, it will be messy!  I think my hands will look like Barney for a few days!  I laid the piece of paper onto my grid paper and took a piece of tissue and dabbed off the remaining shaving cream and heat set the paper to dry the remaining cream.  Be advised, this project never seems to truly dry though and can smear color onto other projects if you’re not careful.

I used the Magical Day stamp set as this set is a perfect compliment to the galaxy background!  I colored the wizard using the Stampin’ Blends markers in both light and dark Night of Navy and Ivory for the wizard’s face.  To add a little more magic, I used the Glitter Enamel dots to add a pop of sparkle!

  1. Brilliant! I have done and love the shaving cream technique but never thought to let it sit. What a wonderful and different effect you get. I will be doing this soon.

  2. who knew that leaving the foam to sit could be so much fun, TFS! PS – where does the sparkle come from I wonder …
